Disappointment
Lāpule, Iaunali Iwakālua Kūmāwalu,
Hoka with Google and Blogger. All my posts with pictures have gone away. They keep making changes and the result is MY CONTENT is deleted. So much for free speech. I do not do political posts on this blog. You can see my political rantings at Wordpress. This is so disappointing.
Till next time, a hui hou.

Farmers Market
Pō'akolu, Iaunali 'Umi Kūmālima,
In the Hawaiian language, "Mahi 'ai" means farms. We have a lot of farms here. Most are small and some are large. We also have Farmers markets!
Popular places to shop for food and many different kinds of things.

Tuesday's Expanse
Pō'alua, Ianuali Iwakālua Kūmāhā,
The weather has the winds from the south east blowing VOG towards the outer islands. For us it is a day of trade winds, puffy clouds and variable breezes. The VOG hasn't been as bad as it has in past years, and that's a good thing.

My Day Off
Pō'aono, Iaunali Iwakālua Kūmākahi,
Finally I have a day off and I can do whatever I want. I want to relax with a cold drink and a fire.
The cold drink of choice is cranberry juice on ice!
The Stage is set!
The entertainment has begun! It's better than watching TV! The sky is clear and the Milky Way is clearly visible!

More Orchids
Pō'akolu, Iaunali 'Umi Kūmāwalu,
We have such beautiful orchids here on the Big Island. These are grown around the base of an 'Ōhi'a Tree. We attach the orchid to the tree using string and within a years time, these are the flowers that bloom!

Hawaiian Car Alarm
Lāpule, Iaunali 'Umi Kūmālima,
This morning was a crisp chilly morning. The vog has settled out, but the winds are variable, so that means the vog can return. Went shopping for provisions in Hilo. I saw an interesting car alarm.

VOG
Pō'aono, Iaunali 'Umi Kūmāhā,
The air this morning was filled with VOG. The volcano's sulfur smoke drifts to the east side of the island in the winter months. This year the vog isn't as bad as it has been. Halema'uma'u crater isn't producing that much vog as it has in the past. That's a good thing.
The vog makes everything look hazy. It looks like Kona.

Mauna Kea
Pō'ahā, Ianuali 'Umi Kūmālua,
Mauna Kea is the tallest island mountain in the world. Mauna Kea means white mountain, because in the winter snow can appear on the mountain top. The mountain is over 14,000ft tall above sea level. It has observatories which watch the stars at night.

Doggies
Pō'akolu, Ianuali 'Umi Kūmākahi,
I have two dogs and one cat. They all love to spend time outside enjoying the land and weather. In the morning, when we all wake up, the animals are free to roam the property. My one doggie loves running around all excited in the cool morning air, and then she stops to sit on my feet.
The silly one I call Meli.

Roads
Pō'akahi, Ianuali Iwa,
Some of the subdivisions here on these islands have interesting, and challenging roads.
This morning was a chilly 60° degrees Fahrenheit at 5AM. Later, around 6AM when the sun had risen, the warmth of the Sun started to melt away the chill. There's still a chilly Pacific Trade breeze pushing fluffy clouds inland. A good day to start planting and doing some yard work!

City of Refuge
Lāpule, Ianuali Walu,
One of the Big Island's historical landmarks is the City of Refuge. Also known as Pu'uhonua Hōnaunau, the location is just south of Captain Cook and Kealakekua. It is part of the National Park system.
The park has been renovated to represent how Hawaiians lived before discovery by Captain Cook's first arrival on these islands. Restored with fish ponds and thatched long houses that were used as gathering places for daily life activities.
There is a Heiau here where Hawaiians worshiped their gods and conducted ceremonies. It makes you wonder what daily life must have been like for the ancient Hawaiians. No internet, no Facebook!

Lava Tree State Park
Pō'aono, Ianuali Hiku
Visited Lava Tree State park in lower Puna today. Located in the Nanawale forest reserve.
In 1790, a lava flow buried the 'Ōhi'a trees in 11 feet of molten lava. The fissures allowed the lava to drain away leaving the surface lava, and the remaining ashes of the trees. Ghostly images of a ancient forest remains.
The park has been recently renovated with a new parking lot and a updated visitor center. The walking areas are lush with green plant growth, reminding the visitor that Pele can take away what Hi'iaka has grown.

Road to Waikoloa
Pō'ahā, Ianuali Lima
The long road to Waikoloa village and resort has a unique landscape. It is best to drive slow and take the views in.
People collect the bleached stones from the shore area and create messages in the lava fields. If you look carefully, you can see Maui in the distance.
These stones are scattered throughout the highway leading to Waikoloa. The messages vary from congratulations to farewells. Some are in sympathies and others are well wishes. It is considered sacred.
However, the State Park authorities discourage people from doing this practice of messages in the lava beds. It actually violates native Hawaiian respect for the 'Aina (land). It is very important to respect the culture of the host island which you either visit, or live.

Plants, Trees and Things
Pō'akahi, Ianuali Kolu,
Another stunning sunny day has given way to rain again! It's still winter here, our rainy season.
Hapu Pulupulu fern just starting to open its leaves. They love the water and show it with broad leafy ferns.
The rain brings some spectacular rainbows!

The First New Day
Ianuali 'Ekahi,
A beautiful morning on the first day of the new year. Partially cloudy and light trade breezes. We spent the day at home cleaning up after the New Years celebration. Took down the Christmas Tree, packed away the decorations to the workshop and rearranged the furniture back to their normal places.
There's still snow on Mauna Kea and that always amazes me. It will probably melt by the end of the week, unless we get more rain. We have a high surf forecast, 15 mpg winds and sunny weather is scheduled for the week. That will give me time to do some yard work!
I saw this sign at the local transfer station yesterday. It was inspiring! There are always possibilities. You just need to think, plan and execute. If the plan doesn't work, rethink, plan and try again. Good advise for the new year and a good new years resolution as well.
